Day #5 (Fri., Jan. 8, 2010) – Opera Singer In Training

Midnight – I just brought my wife some granola and warm milk and our little burrito is pleasantly napping resting up for the next big feed. When this feed will come, only she knows…but we will certainly know about it when she wants to broadcast. My wife has a little burrito wrap that keeps Katie’s hands away from her face…she won’t be able to wiggle out of this thing…

I put some earplugs in so I could get some deep sleep, but told my wife to wake me if she needed me. I see from the feeding log that she fed Katie at 1:10am and 3:30am and I slept through it all. I’m not sure if it’s because those earplugs worked so well or because I was just in a state of exhaustion. Anyway, it’s 5:55am (ish) now and Little Katie has placed another order for breakfast. If she keeps these set of lungs she will be an Opera Singer one day!

6:00am – I checked to see if little Katie was wet before I took her to my wife and my oh my did she ever “#2 up a storm”. It’s turning brownish in color now, which my wife tells me is good. I can’t imagine my father doing this. He’s from an era in which you said little, talked tough, and definitely didn’t change diapers. The role of the guy has certainly changed since then in our society.

6:30am – I just burped Katie to make room for more food. My wife says that today she wants to clean the umbilical chord and file Katie’s fingernails.

10:03am – Katie was up at 9:45am announcing that we were late for breakfast. I changed her (i.e.: good “poopy”) and gave her to my wife. She is done eating now and about to go back to bed.

12:00pm – My wife and Katie are both resting right now. I should probably be resting too, but I have stuff that I want to get done. Once Katie is up again I might regret this decision.

1:00pm – I just finished sending a couple of videos to family and friends. One with Katie resting peacefully, and another one where she is announcing it is time for dinner. I think they will get a kick out of these videos.

1:07pm – Spoke too soon…Katie is up again…

3:00pm – I just finished making my wife some Butter Chicken & Rice and for dessert…ta da…Apple Turnover with Coffee Ice Cream. Katie is up looking for dinner as well. She doesn’t have quite the variety of options to choose from just yet.

3:19pm – My wife just gave little Katie her first manicure!

3:30pm – I can’t stay awake any longer…time for a nap. My wife is reading this web log as I drop off to sleep…

5:30pm – I’m up now, and my wife is sleeping. I hear little Katie squeaking in her crib, so I’m not sure how much longer my wife will be sleeping…

6:30pm – Katie is stirring about, but still sleeping. I left her and my wife in the bedroom so they could sleep, and went to the living room to watch the news on television.

2010-01-08 Dinner Is Served!7:42pm – My wife and I just finished dinner (i.e.: lentil soup with a toasted cheese and avocado sandwich on whole wheat bread) and Katie is still asleep. Thanks for small pleasures. Katie seems to be sleeping longer and longer now. Hopefully this is a sign of what is to come.

8:15pm and there is a rustling and a stirring in the crib beside our bed. Little Katie has exited “dreamland” and into the “here and now”. As I was approaching the crib my wife said to check and see if she needed her diaper changed. A few steps away and the gurgles and toots left no doubt. The answer to this question is a definitive “Affirmative”. So, the cycle continues:

a) Taxi Driver Daddy change baby.
b) Taxi Driver Daddy rush baby to Mommy Restaurant.
c) Table Setting for One.
d) Menu has one item: “The Daily Special – Momma’s Milk. The Price: $Priceless.”
e) Gorge till full.
f) Fall asleep at table.
g) Waiting Taxi Driver Daddy will take back home and put to bed…

9:00pm – I just burped little Katie and this time some “milky stuff” came out of her mouth. Maybe I’m getting the hang of this “burping thing” after all?

9:45pm – Katie was hiccuping so I gave her back to her mom for a bit more milk. A little drink and the hiccups seem to go away.
