Day #1217 (Sat., May 4, 2013) – Watching The Derby

2013-05-04- Garden Strawberry

I called my mother up this afternoon and she has a bit of an infection. The doctor gave her some antibiotics so she is resting. We decided to forgo a Skype session today…but she did get to talk to Katie for a bit.

My wife went down to the garden this morning and got Katie a fresh strawberry (see photo to the left). Once Katie eyed it it didn’t last long. She then said delish and wanted another…

While Katie was taking her afternoon nap my wife went shopping. She needed to pick up some groceries at Trader Joe’s as she is making lunch for Katie’s class next week. She also wanted to go to Lowe’s to pick up some flowers for Teacher Appreciation Day next week.

The Kentucky Derby was on television this evening and I took the time to explain the process to her. I told her how the bell would sound and the horses would run around the track and the fastest one would be pronounced the winner. I also told her that the man who rides on the back of the horse is called “Jockey”. She had a hard time with the concept that this was the position…not the name of the man himself.

Katie asked a number of good questions actually… When the horses were being put in the cage at the start of the race she asked if this is where they lived. I explained to her that they lived in stables surrounding the track. She then asked why some of the horses have bandages on their legs. To cover a “boo boo” of course…
