Day #5249 – (Mon., May 20, 2024) – Iowa –> South Dakota

We got away from our lakefront Air B&B before 9 am this morning. We decided to take a little trip through the south west corner of Minnesota as we were so close. We stopped off at a little shop called “Casey’s” so I could get a black cup of coffee on the way.

We arrived in Minnesota around 10:30 am and stopped at a Dairy Queen to eat. Bobby had the “Ultimate Cookie Dough” Blizzard. My wife had a chicken salad with honey mustard dressing. I had a $7 chicken tender meal with fries and a caramel sundae. Katie passed on food, but did get a nice big drink.

I finished listening to the audio version of the autobiography of Carrie Fisher this morning. Not as good as I had hoped. I listened to quite a bit of classic rock on my Samsung Galaxy this afternoon as I enjoyed the 80 mph speed limit in South Dakota!

We stopped off at a small general store in a small town in Iowa for a bathroom break (see photo to the right). A kid on a brand new bike went into the store ahead of us. I complimented him on his new bike and when he left the lady behind the counter told me that he was spoiled… 🙂 She told me that the grew up here all her life, but moved away to Kansas for two years but moved back when the people there were not as friendly. I picked up a Starbucks Iced Coffee as their hot coffee was not that fresh.

I bought Bobby a small “Ninja” basketball at his request at one of our “bathroom break” locations (see photo to the left). He also wanted an energy drink. I tried the Monster Energy and Red Bull Drinks at one point and boy do they ever perk you up! It seems that they also make you want to go to the bathroom more. Perhaps all the caffeine?

As was passed into South Dakota, the flat lands of Iowa gradually morphed into the rolling hills and “Badlands”. About an hour before we arrived in Rapid City, the skies opened up and did it ever rain. My wife ordered ahead some Chinese Food at a restaurant down the road from the Air B&B where we would be staying (see photo to the right).

Katie took Batman into the Air B&B without the leash which had disaster written all over it, but things worked out fine. Bobby and Katie played a game of hangman while my wife took a bath. Daddy was exhausted from such a long day of driving and quickly went to bed after his fill of Chinese food!
