Day #5433 – (Wed., Nov. 20, 2024) – Meeting Bobby’s Teacher
Bobby went to school today but Katie is home.
I picked up Bobby after school today. He told me that he is working on a backpack project made out of cereal boxes with one of his classmates. You can see him bringing this “backpack” to the car in the photo to the left. Bobby also told me that there was a book fair at Huband today and spent over $20 on books…
My wife and I went to meet Bobby’s teacher Debbie at 4 pm this evening. The lights went out in the little building beside the main school, which is where Bobby’s class is, so we had to go into the hallway of the school to talk and she what he prepared for us.
She told us that he is doing well in almost everything, but especially shines in history and social studies. Perhaps because the Canadian content is new to him. She also said that he is a bit of the class clown but is realizing that he doesn’t need to be this way to have friends. I mentioned to Debbie that he has an “artsy” side and plays violin, so that she should look out for whatever he seems to be the happiest in, as when my teachers realized I could do math they channeled me to that area, while I think I would have been much happier in life if my artsy side was channeled more. She seemed to really appreciate this input and wrote it down. My wife mentioned on the drive home that she wrote down that he played violin on a form before school started, so perhaps Debbie forgot, or didn’t get this form.
There is a Christmas Market at Huband this Saturday. Bring “cash” $$$…
My wife took the kids to viola/violin class this evening. She took my car as the van is in the shop with a “strange sound”. Hopefully not much to it and the repair will be “cheap”… We will probably hear from them tomorrow…
Katie’s report card came today.
Her French teacher said: “Katie has achieved all the expected learning goals for reading and comprehension, speaking and listening, and writing. One way this is demonstrated is through an oral assignment that can be found on her Brightspace account. Katie goes above and beyond by taking her time and adding extra components to her assignments. Katie agrees that her goal for Quarter 2 is to work on her verb memorization and conjugations.”
Her Math teacher said: “Katie is able to grasp and apply concepts in mathematics very well. She works hard to complete assignments within the deadlines and is able to show her calculations for more complex problems. Katie has demonstrated her knowledge by applying exponent laws to simplify several types of algebraic expressions. I encourage her to continue to synthesize her knowledge by reviewing and summarizing her notes regularly, and to continue to ask for help and clarification when needed.”
Her Social Studies teacher said: “Students have completed their geography unit, looked at European expansion around the world, compared the American and French revolutions, and begun their unit on the Napoleonic Wars. Katie is a strong student who works hard. She has had some challenges with attendance this quarter but if she improves her attendance and continues to work the way she has, there is no reason that she can’t achieve an Extending grade at the end of the semester.”
Law was not on the report card, but her teacher said: “Law 9/10 explores the legal system through investigating a crime scene. As an investigator, students analyze evidence, witness statements, and other elements to determine who ‘dunnit’ learning about ways police solve crime along the way. After, class participates in a trial to arrive at a verdict on the guilt or innocence of the accused in the crime. Katie has been a pleasure to have in the class. Her work consistently demonstrated proficient in both effort and the quality of information included in course work, and twice demonstrated extending on work submitted.”
